One can safely assess Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi as that rare writer-director who has fully earned the title of artist - all of his movies evince a trademark signature style and recurrent themes, per the most respected cinematic authors. Yet Panahi's significance runs far deeper than this alone implies. His relevance is, at heart, a sociopolitical one. In the director's beleaguered home country, where freedom of speech and expression are the exceptions and not the rule, Panahi continued to thwart totalitarian restrictions on his work, often risking his own life and safety to do so. Despite periodic arrests, imprisonment, threats on his own person, federal prohibitions forbidding him to direct, and many other ills, Panahi exhibited an irrepressible voice.
